Mine is shifted 1" to the right in Opera. John W.(M) said it would return when the dust settled, when ever that may be.

Me too.

'owdy Wayne,

I don't see a page shift on my 98FE machine with MSIE v6.0SP1 -perfectly centered.

My experience:

a. The screen is jerking when using the elevator either by pulling it, clicking somewhere in it, or just clicking the down-arrow.

b. Forum screens load too slow now even with cable -- I might as well be back using a 56k modem. In fact, I find the forum about 75% slower to render pages than any other site accessed doing genealogy.

c. I find that clicking a thread hyperlink, rather than using "Next Message", is slower to render and many times the "page cannot be found" is rendered.

d. Getting tired of having to log-on. It'll go a few days and even though the former cookie is still resident, I'm prompted to log-on. It appeared that just before this last tweak the cookies situation was finally corrected but now its back.

Nothing is different on my machine whatsoever other than collecting some dust. I find using the forums a drag the older it gets and the more tweaks they install.

Slowly fading away from it.

Slow to render
Oct 28, 2006 10:45PM PDT

I'm using Safari with OS 10.4.8 on a Mac and since the change I have noticed that the whole site is much, much slower to load than it was before the change.

Like you, nothing has changed on my machine and although I do not have the login problem, I do get the occasional "page not found".

Haven't seen you around in a while.

I don't like the new look, and I'm not alone as per the responses from Lee's announcement. I'm slowly gravitating away myself, I visit SE maybe once a month, then just to aggravate someone. Wink Maybe it'll get better. Until then, look here from the last time they changed something http://67.187.86.98/cnetnot.htm

Having those same problems, plus 1" shift to Rt.

Its all these no nothing AD's. Once they all load, the threads work. Try to move around from post to post and its wait till the AD's load. They can tweak and tweak till hell freezes over. Few more Ads and its all going to grind to a halt unless they throw some more juice in here.

If you use Firefox....

Try Adblock Plus and Adblock Filter.G Updater add-ons (Extensions). This may help but I must say CNet Forums all work slowly and time out frequently.

Just a suggestion!

I have AdBlock Plus on the FF 1.5 that I use on W2K Pro. Still playing around with it, so I haven't seen any thrilling results yet. Got to concentrate a little more on it I guess.

Rolway, it is a little intimidating at first...

Took me a while to discover right clicking on the advertisement and then selecting 'Ad Block' was procedure to be followed... just ok the link that shows in the popup window. I find this works quite well. Happy

I got it working pretty good, right clicking like you said, but with some Ads, the AdBlocker frame to click on does not show up at the bottom. And hopping from one forum or thread they seem to come back. I shut the PC down every night and starting up this AM the FF window was all messed up. Uninstalled Adblocker and it returned to normal. I have Adblocker back on there now again and all seems OK. Must be an easier way to run this thing. I'll have to bone up some more on it I guess. Thanks again Glenn.

George. Course beng halloween...... maybe.Happy

A tip...
Oct 31, 2006 7:35AM PST

When you right-click and choose to AdBlock an image, iFrame, etc, you'll see the long URL for the actual image when the main AdBlock screen comes up. Instead of just clicking OK cut it down to just the base URL to block all ads from that ad server, not just the one. My top blocked ones are:

* adlog.com.com
* reviews-content.search.com/search
* doubleclick.net
* bwp.cnet.com/search
* mediaplex.com
* mads.cnet.com
* atdmt.com
* googlesyndication.com

Remember to be careful what you block, though, for a wrong click could block all images, including backgrounds, from a site, making it look quite nasty.

Good Tip John...Thanks... working good now.

I have always used Opera and like it better, but it looks like I'll be using FF more now, at least on C-Net anyway. Runs smoother without those Ads.

Thanks again John & Glenn for the help. George

Another Tip
Oct 31, 2006 9:51AM PST

I use two Adblock Plus filter subscription lists to take care of most of my blocking. This gets you going out of the box without having to manually set up filters.

These lists are frequently updated as the maintainers find out about new ad delivery methods and Adblock plus will automatically update (import) the updated filters.

The lists I use are:

- EasyList
- EasyElement

Use Tools -> Adblock Plus to access the ''Adblock Plus Preferences'' dialog box.

Use Filters -> Add filter subscription to access it's dialog.

Make sure that "Update automatically" and "Enable filters" are checked.

Click ''View all subscriptions'' to see the known subscriptions. Click ''Subscribe'' to the lists that are appropriate to you. Return to the Preferences dialog window. Click OK to exit dialogs. Close the subscription list tab.

Bob's your uncle. Filters all set up and working.

You can click the ''ABP'' stop sign icon on the address bar to see the items being blocked on a page.

You are good to go now...

Halloween is over so just hang in... longer you use it the better it becomes. Grin John, gave you a very good tip! Had not done that myself. Once blocked mine generally hold until they make some change... the tip should help with that.

All the best!

Yep, I was doing good with it...

But, as usual I didn't listen to John's added note about being careful of what I filtered and then with Owyn's tip it filtered a bit too much. Rough going there for awhile. I was wanting to install FF2 anyway, so I dumped everything and put it all back on with FF2. Running good now. Thanks Glenn, John & Owyn. Pleasure doing business with you.

And this new FF2 is OK. I just noticed it underlines mis-spelled words in red on the replys.
