Simultaneous camcorder recording and webcam broadcasting

Nov 5, 2006 5:34PM PST

I need to chose a video device for our educational project that we can use simultaneously as a web-cam with a modest resolution for internet (skype, ichat, etc.) video conference courses around the world as well as to record that class at a higher resolution, though high definition is not needed. Recording directly to DVD appeals to me because of the cost efficiency and ease of duplication. We will have to purchase quite a few of these, so cost is an issue.

Any thoughts, recommendations, etc?

Try looking at some of the lesser Sony models such as the DCR-DVD105. Or the Canon models. Check out this website too. www.camcorderinfo.com

Is the ability to simultaneously record and webcam built in?
Nov 7, 2006 5:56PM PST

Thank you for your reply.

The DVD convenience is a big factor. I read jcrobso's concerns and they may not apply in this case. The camcorder will not be moving much and the recording time I'll need will almost always be one hour or less.

Do the camcorders you listed have built in ability to simultaneously record and webcam or is some outside software needed?

Does output to A/V mean that it can be used as a webcam?

Thanks for your reply. I read your post on DVD camcorders, it was very informative and interesting.

You wrote, "they can record to tape and output to A/V at the same time." Does the ability to output to A/V mean that it can also be used as a simultaneous digital webcam or will I need some program such as WebCamDv also? http://www.orangeware.com/endusers/webcamdv.html
