Simply bad advice

Most tech support dont acknowledge that you may know more about the OS than they do and ask you to do things that are clearly not the problem.

Recently when I had a problem getting into a site which would not accept my uid and password (which was ok the day before) I was asked to reset my IE back to default settings (ugh) and blow away all my cookies.

This was after I suggested that if I could logon the day before and had made no updates they might have changed something on the site.

Coincidently, their password change mechanism was broken so who knows what else was changed.
