Simple way to back up an iPhone 7

This does not tell me "how" to lock my iPhone. I am 86 years old and not computer literate. I probably have no business owning an iPhone or MacBook.

I just press the power button once to turn off the screen then the next tap I see my lock screen.

I don't understand what you said. "my lock screen?"

I only have two iPhones and both show the lock screen when they are off and I press either the round button on the front or a tap of the power button.

I may be just plain stupid but when I try either method you suggested and push the round button on the front bottom of my phone I see "Press Home to unlock." My phone is in this position each night when I plug it into the charger. If I am connected to WiFi when I do this it should "back up" shouldn't it? I don't do anything to shut my iPhone off, I just let it go to sleep.....I suppose? I feel like such a dunder head.

If you see "Press Home to unlock" then you are seeing the lock screen for your iPhone.

As to "should it backup?" that I can't answer as I didn't setup your phone but at this point you have met the requirements you stated in your top post.

If you use the same wording that I will see..... I understand, but if you say "lock screen," it doesn't register with me. Thank you for finally getting through to me. Now, I just have to assume that if I have WiFi turned on when my phone goes to sleep it will "back up" overnight on the charger. And what would I look for to see how my phone was "set up"? Never ending questions.
