Question

Simple Gadget?

Sep 19, 2016 12:40AM PDT

I am trying to make a gadget that will be able to receive code wirelessly and make the code into text on a small 3 inch screen. What all do I need to achieve this? Is it possible to make an app that can transmit signals via wifi or bluetooth to this three inch screen? What all components do I need for the screen to change the signal to text? I have very little experience dealing with all of this.

1000 Feet?
Sep 23, 2016 11:33PM PDT

Are you sure we are talking about 1000 Feet? Route for 1000 feet isn't something that come so easily. Sounds like you are in the navy and there is nothing but salty water all around you. I wish you good luck.

Answer
I'd do this with a smart phone.

That way it's ready to go for a minimal cost and you can duplicate it widely.

I picked up a 20 dollar Android phone so it's a slam dunk this is the way to go.

I have thought of this I was just wondering if I would be able to send messages to it without internet or cell phone service. If so how would i do this?

Why yes you can. How?

I'd use Bluetooth for the path in that case.

Remember I take it you are a doer and a programmer. I've run into folk that have an idea and they rush off and then burn out as they learn they have to wire up devices and write code.

The solution I gave the nod to frees us from hardware dependence and gives us a free dev system (Android Studio) which has fine tutorials and more.

The 20 buck Android (if you don't have an Android phone already) is the http://www.cnet.com/products/motorola-moto-e/review/ which was 19.99 online and in stores.

Android Studio is free and there are plenty of tutorials.

mini coax connector adapter, get the male to female, or female to male, as needed.

Get an wifi device that has an antenna already on it. I use this one, works quite well.

EBay short link
Amazon short link

You then attach to an outdoor antenna like this one I used, which also came with 50 foot of coaxial cable. It's got a pre-amp with it. Highly directional.

I just got back to Maryland from Florida a week ago and this was the setup I used to access a neighbor's deliberately open system further than 1000 feet from the trailer where I was staying. The trailer was metal clad, like a faraday cage effect, so needed outside antenna. You remove the small antennas on the device, use a splitter with short coax cables to the mini coax adapters allowing connection to the USB wifi modem device, connect a coax cable to the preamp/motor box for TV-out. Of course the main cable runs from the antenna to that box.

Code as in "secret"? it's ok to dream but...

sound like you need to do some homework first. Why do we need one of this? Don't tell me, I don't even use cell phone. Good luck.

This is me doing my homework...

I have a cabin out of cell range with no connection to the internet. I am trying to find out if I can set up a wireless router that will go 1000 feet. And connect to a device that just needs to receive text from an iPad.

1000 feet.

That's not in your top post so my idea is not impractical since you can't be sure of Bluetooth or WiFi at 1000 feet.

There are links at that distance but the cost will slam you.

OK I also have FreedomPop. It gets me a lot of cellular date for zero bucks a month. The CNET Cheapskate noted it at https://www.cnet.com/how-to/get-totally-free-global-phone-service-and-messaging/

I bought that and so far so good.
