Simple Canon Vixia HD20 Battery Charge Question

Mar 19, 2009 7:54AM PDT

I just received my new Canon Vixia HD20 camcorder and I put the battery in it and turned it on and nothing (No indicator light), so obviously the battery is dead. So I read the manual about charging the battery and it said to make sure the power switch is off. I don't know if it's off or not. I don't want to screw it up already. Can someone tell me if it matters or if the light will show after I plug it in? Or should the battery already be charged when I opened the package? Thanks

Well...

To start with, there is no "HD20" form Canon.

There are HV20 (miniDV tape), HF20 (flash memory) and HG20 (hard disc drive) consumer grade camcorders...

Read the manual.

For the HV20:

See Page 13 for the location of the power button.
See page 10 for understanding the Operating Modes on the Power Switch.
See Page 18 for the location and functionality description of the Charge Indicator light.

For the HF20:
http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/4/0300001964/02/hf20-200-nim01-en.pdf
See page 21 for the location of the power button.
See Page 27 and 28 for the location and functionality description of the Power Charge light.

For the HG20:
Looks like Canon has not yet posted the manual. I'll guess it is similar to the HF20. Since you just got the camcorder, I presume you have the manual...

In ALL cases, if the camcorder is correctly plugged in to a working AC outlet with its power adapter, if the camcorder is ON, then the charge light will be off. Just turn the camcorder off and the charge light should illuminate. When charging is complete, the Charge light will extinguish.

Thanks Chickenorfish and boya 84. The manual says to check the on/off light but with the battery dead, there was no on/off light. Yea, Boya 84, I meant HG20. I got a manual online yesterday at Canon website. I just went ahead and plugged it in and the "charging" light started flashing. I just didn't want to do anything wrong.
