Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX HSM

Feb 23, 2010 5:35AM PST

I didn't realize when I won an auction on ebay for the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX HSM that there were two versions of this lens.
Can anyone tell me the differences in these lenses? Would I be better off to sell the older one from around 2002 I won on ebay for $520 with shipping and buy the new version? I can't seem to find anything online that tells me what the older one was replaced and what the changes were.

actually there are 5

Sigma just announced the 70-200 F2.8 with image stabilization.

As for the difference between the DG and the older version, they changed some optics and adding a coating to the lens to decrease effects of ghosting, chromatic abberation, flare, etc. The difference in image quality would be very minor. The only thing I would worry about is if the lens is compatible with your camera now. Sigma does not pay a license to the manufacturers to get the codes needed to tranfer info back and forth from the lens to the camera. With some of the older Tamron and Sigma lens, they need to be re-chipped to get them to work right on new DSLR models. It's not prevalent but it does happen to a lot of people.

If it works fine with your camera then just keep it and make the most of it, because the difference between the two lens are not much at all.
