Sick of my bulky laptop, need MAJOR advice on new one

Jun 7, 2012 11:42AM PDT

So I have been using Sony Vaio's for 7 years and believe it's time for this business professional to get a little slicker.

I was advised that I could get a sharp looking (yes I want it to look cool),15 inch screen (for excel spreadsheets), lightweight, 6 hour battery life (for flights) handling Office Professional (most use is for doc, ppt, xcl) for around $700-$800. I've looked at reviews and I'm more confused than when I started.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Suggest if you have the time, to visit any office outlet or better computer shops/centers(even Wal-Mart) and look at the "floor models".You'll get a hands-on of what you like and test it a bit. If you care to take a flash drive with sample .docs and see how it looks. Any website vendors will have the same laptops but that touch and feel makes a difference, IMO or order one once you tested locally. Any newer laptop will be a welcome sight after dealing with a 7yr. old model, so it shouldn't take long to pick one. Notice i didn't offer any model or brand, allow yourself that choice. Wink

FYI- Cool doesn't amount to a hill of beans if you can't depend on it so get what makes your grade now and later.

Yes, I will check out touch and feel. I did like how the Samsung 7 felt with it's raised wrist area. Just to clarify I've had 3 Vaios in 7 years. As far as cool, I just want something sharp...most importantly functional for my needs. Don't care about graphics or sound (hence the video/audio system in my house or ipad/iphone for travel).

Much appreciated Willy.

Online vendor and possibility local, checkout Costco. Some of my clients liked the selection, but its the warranty they liked much more. Same laptops as elsewhere and pricing is competitive as most. Since, you're looking at so-called thin laptops many are more expensive and generally speaking any laptop that's long battery life may not come real thin, but thinner or inline with what currently out there. enjoy -----Willy Happy

Again, I've been bending my brain looking at reviews..CNET says the HP Folio is their pick of all the midsize, I saw on gotapex.com they have an HP Envy w/ Ivy Bridge 15.6 inch screen for $887. I think 13 inch would be too small for me, but thanks for the comment. Truly appreciate it.

Sadly I can't write nice about HP.

The short story is they killed my 3 month old laptop in their service and never made good. Something went horribly wrong and it's a name I can't trust. Not buying that name again because it's unsure they can repair any issue today. Longer story is pretty long but HP's service appears to be questionable.

My Sony's faltered just once (knock on wood) in 7 years, and the one time it did, they had a serviceman at my house within a day. Anyone have comments on Acer, Samsung or Dell service? Anyone comment on experience with their Acer, Samsung, or Dell Ultra?

Also, went to best buy and think I can handle a 13" at home and office (especially on the airlines).

Take a look at

Acer's S3, Zenbook and Dell's offering too.

Some talk about dell issues but the only reason I see so many failures is we have had dell at the office for years. Something will eventually break.

Anyone that has had experience with these brands is appreciated as well. I can handle a 13" keyboard, tried one out.

Thanks, Ryan
