any running application or device driver can delay the shutdown. since they are different machines, they will have significantly different device drivers, any one of which could be the cause. the only thing you can do is to talk to HP and update any drivers on the machine to see if that helps.

I have 2pc's: one-wipro PIII 866 Mhz,192MB ram,20gb HDD,52xCdrom,FDD.Two-HP vectra,PIV 1.6Ghz,256Mb Ram,20GB HDD,52xCdROM,24xCDRW,FDD.Both of them run windows xp home edition with service pack 1.The problem i face isthat while the wipro pc takes a little over 10 secs to shutdown, the HP pc takes well over 7-8 minutes to shutdown completely.i have cleaned all startup files using msconfig and also have defragmented the drives. The hp pc has 2 partitions of 10 gb each of which 6GB is empty in each. Can you pleasetell me why the HP pc having a superior configuration takes such a long time to shutdown?
