Have a look at this article from Microsoft. In addition, on xp pro you no longer get "the message saying that windows was not shut down properly, and scandisk does not run".

Try start and click help and go to maintance in Windows --you should get a line of items and one of them is Shutting Down and Starting Up. Follow the Directions and you should be good to go...I had same thing happen me just two weeks ago, the tab to shutdown when turned on was checked but I took it off, reset it and rebooted--done fine ever sence...there are alot of troubleshooting helps there and if that don't work, use them and something should work. Good Luck

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
