With so little to go on, one can only suggest that you scan your PC to be sure that it is free off spyware/parasites/worms/trojans.

Are you running P2P software like Kazaa/imesh etc?

Also a registry cleanup may be needed.

Hi David , Ive run all the scans and reg. repairs etc.And Yes I am running Kazaa now but this was happening before Kazaa was installed.
To add to this some pages such as this C/Net help wont close unless I stop it with the taskmanager.

Beside your machine being KAZAA'd.
May 14, 2004 9:55PM PDT

I can't bring myself to write that I don't expect your issues to go away with KAZAA on the machine. Its not a nice piece of software and installs too many parasites so any level of performance or stability on a KAZAA'd machine is always uncertion. If you want to learn about it, read the next two links, the last link is how to troubleshoot XP Shutdown.

Hi Bob,
Sorry but there was so much information that I am totally confused.I thought there maybe a 'do this or do that' solution for a novis.I did many scans but found nothing and cleaned registries.I removed Kazaa and its registration in regedit.Seems that I cannot fix this.
Thanks ...Wally.

You need to run KazaaBeGone!
May 16, 2004 1:46AM PDT

You'll be surprised that Kazaa has still left tons of registry entries and parasites on your PC.
Download and run KazaaBeGone and you'll see what I mean:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/kazaagone.html
http://www.spychecker.com/screenshots/kazaagone.htm

Also Kazaa comes bundled with Gator/Claria, New.Net and tons of spyware that runs in the background thus preventing your PC from shutting down.

Scan with Ad-Aware & SpyBot S&D to remove all these parasites.

But note that removal of New.Net may cause you to lose your Internet connection as that program may alter your IP settings and cause damage to your Winsock 2 settings.
Before you remove it download LSPFix:
http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm

If all esle fail your only solution is to do a clean install.

Addendum to KAZAA'd.
May 16, 2004 12:30AM PDT

I can imagine being overwhelmed with the three helpings (links) that I supplied.

But I am not showing you any disrespect when I write that I can't assure any person that has Kazaa'd their machine that it will work properly. Either now or until they fix it or even reload the OS. I can only point to the readings (links) and hope they find their way out of the maze.

While there are removal tools like http://www.spyware-cop.com/ , it may take time to run Adaware, Spybot, Cwshredder and Houstcall to clean out the machine. Then you can proceed to the XP Shutdown Article and begin working the issues.

No one said it would be easy or "do this."

Hi Bob,
Please dont think that have given you the idea that you have treated me with disrespect. On the contrary I think you have been marvelous and very courteous.I have tried all that you and David Chan have suggested without fixing the problem.Probably when I am able I'll take the computer to a technician and have him do a clean reinstall. It is probably beyond me.
Thanks.....Wally .
