Shut down problems

Sep 3, 2004 8:26AM PDT

My computer has been having difficulty shuting down. It will often start up again all by its self, whether I use the menu shut down or manually push the on off button on the front of my computer. Some times it will restart after 30 seconds, sometimes up to 10 minutes later. I have Norton Antivirus updated. Occasionally a message comes up after start up which say "you are using selective start up for trouble shooting". I don't know if this message is related to the shut down problem or not.

bpiers,

Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information as possible about your computer. Depending on your issue, we might need the operating system, processor speed, amount of RAM installed, brand name of the computer, (if there is one), and any EXACT error messages you are receiving, and the EXACT version of Norton, plus any other information you think might be helpful. The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be.

In the meantime, try the steps at the links below to clean things up a little:

After doing that, because heat can also cause some of those issues, take the cover off the computer tower, then clean out the inside (blow out the dust, etc.) and make sure that the fans are running correctly.

The "Selective Start Up" message can be stopped by checking the appropriate box on the message, but recognize that it normally means you have "unchecked" and item in the "msconfig-start up tab" area. It's normal when that occurs in such situations.

Hope this helps.
