Shut down problems

Jun 28, 2004 7:39AM PDT

We have a Dell 4550, XP Home in office.About three weeks ago, it started not shutting down properly. Also started having trouble with CD burner drive--would not always work(to make data backups--or just play a CD) I found out they didn't have spy programs. Had them start using AdAware, Pest Patrol, Spybot, got rid of hundreds. Had Norton--when ran full scan, found 7 seven viruses. After we cleaned everything we know how to clean--still won't shut down. Took Norton off, Put AVG on--won't shut down. Took AVG off--it will shut down. Please, give me some suggestions.

rs,

Please run the CWShredder tool below as another step to clean out the spyware:

CWShredder Hijack Removal Tool

As a "second opinion" on the virus issue, please click on either, or both of the free online scans below. Delete all infected files found:

Housecall Online Scan

Panda Online Scan

If everything comes up clean, have you checked the links below:

Windows stops responding during Windows XP shut down

In addition, have you installed Windows XP Service Pack 1 and if so, have you also installed all of the Windows Updates at the Windows Update site? If not, please do so.

Hope this helps.

Thank you. Yes all updates are installed. We will try programs you suggested. I will send results--maybe help someone else.

At my shop we always suggest wiping and reloading the operating system if the computer has more than 5 viruses, or if the virus does significant damage. If you dont want to do anything that drastic, i would suggest running a repair of windows. It's pretty simple and your data will remain on the drive.
