General discussion

Should you use Internet cafes.

Jul 13, 2011 8:06AM PDT

I got my first laptop last year, but before that I used to go to Internet cafes. And one experience I had last week brought back memories of the past, before I had my own computer.

I have to wonder...
Jul 13, 2011 9:28PM PDT

You enter some internet cafe and assume that you can download and install any software you like, without asking the owner's permission. Then 'to your surprise', the manager of the internet cafe says "you cannot do that".

Tell me, if a complete stranger entered your home and attempted to download some software onto your tablet or notebook, without your permission, how you would view that?

Just a note in passing, SafeFox is no longer supported; safefox.org is for sale. It is interesting that you continue to use a browser that is now without support. But then, seeing from your other discussions and posts in these forums that you decry computer and internet security of all kinds, I wonder why I am surprised.

May be you would be better using Pale Moon? Ohh, I see you already are;
http://windows7forums.com/windows-7-software/51147-pale-moon-safefox-web-browser-alternatives-firefox-made-only-windows.html
but don't expect internet cafe managers to be any less resistant to you downloading and installing that browser on their systems.

Internet Cafes are great for those who don't have their own computers, but you play by their rules.

One other thing. You also tell us you were turned away from one internet cafe and you assume this was because you were using their computers to blog about your associations with Lebanon and Hezbollah and your YouTube channel. I have to say I would not have been surprised at that. Whilst free speech is important, not only in this country, (the UK), but also in the US and most other Western Oriented nations, I very much doubt that internet cafe owners and managers relish the thought of MI5 swooping in to arrest them and confiscate their computers as part of their continuing anti-terrorism campaigns in the UK. You may disagree with all that of course, and that is your prerogative. You have the right to continue to say what you wish. Just don't expect internet cafe owners to turn a blind eye when you attempt such discussions and blogging on their premises.

I wonder if hotels would have the same concerns.

Re-I have to wonder-

Yes,I did notice that when I clicked on the web link for the home page of Safefox I got redirected to the website of Safefox that says the domain is up for sale and the home page of Safefox does not have a download link. But I found Safefox here on the C.Net website. And so I downloaded it and I liked it. And so I have it on all my computers and I am using it. And it seems that Safefox is based on Firefox 3.5.2 which is a slightly earlier version of Firefox. And I wondered why it is that they have not made any new versions of Safefox. As Firefox clones, like Comet Bird,Pale Moon, Wyzo and others usually get updated every few months. I was wondering if Safefox could perhaps be an earlier version of Pale Moon browser. That they then changed the name to Pale Moon,as both browsers are Firefox browsers made only for Windows. I wonder if you know the answer to this.

where's the privacy?

Wow, thanks for this post! I didn't know that the managers in Internet Cafes could see all that you were doing... checking it and judging you against it...
That rather sucks since Internet Cafes are a good way to get cheap Internet (where I'm from, anyway) and pass the time when you can't afford or don't have your own laptop..

Well,in an Internet cafe, the man at the desk knowns how long you have been on the computer, as they charge you by the hour. So if they put you on, say computer number 4,they now how long you have stayed on there, and so they must also know what sites you have been on.

why not

Internet cafes serve their purpose, I mostly use them to check out messages or find out recent events of importance when there's no other connection available. Of course, like in any caffe you can sit to a rude person but that occurs rarely. From my experience most of the people mind their own business. Other important thing you might want to check before use is price per hour. Just so you don't get surprised, cause in some countries they really like to charge Blush

In the local internet cafes near my home in Essex people are polite and not rude. But if you go to central London or The West End as it is known, people are not so nice. Take Queensway or Bayswater W2, which is a tourist part of London but also a residential area, where a lot of people live. There are at least 10 or more Internet cafes along Queensway High Street but the shopkeepers are not very helpful.
