Should i wait? Samsung HL-P5085W

Jul 28, 2005 10:10PM PDT

I really like the Samsung HL-P5085W (wish it was little bit more bigger in terms of screen size), there are some stores that carry it for about $1900.00? Is this a TV really worth buying or will it be and old and outdated technology by time christmas comes around? Should i hold out little longer? For maybe other series to come out?

Returned this set
Jul 29, 2005 1:00AM PDT

I bought this set last month after watching it in the store (BestBuy). With their closed HD loop, the picture looked very good. I further loved the pedestal styling. However, after it was delivered, I found that only HD and DVD's looked good. It simply did not do a very good job with non-HD signals. I could also detect a bit of the "rainbow effect". I am on Comcast cable and the first 70 channels are analog signals. Unfortunately, most of the programs I like to watch are in this range. The HD channels are spectacular on this set, but with only 5 channels that continually broadcast in HD, you don't have a lot of choice in what to watch. I'm not one who watches HD simply because it's HD....it has to be a program that is interesting to me. When I returned it to BestBuy, they offered to upgrade me to the new 2006 model at no additional cost to me, but I declined. Instead, I bought the Sony KDF-42WE655 LCD. I went with the 42 inch as I found that the Samsung 50 inch was a little too large for my space. I couldn't be happier with my decision. For me, the Sony HD picture is every bit as good (if not better) than the Samsung. More importantly, the Sony does a superb job of upgrading the analog signals to the point that I cant tell the difference between analog and non-HD digital. The icing on the cake is that this set only cost me $1760.00. So, if you're only going to watch HD and DVD's, the Samsung would probably work for you. If you plan on watching regular broadcast programming, check the Samsung out thoroughly before you commit, or at least have the option of returning it if you don't like it.

OH-HECK!!!! I am so glad I read this!!!!!
Jul 29, 2005 2:21PM PDT

Oh-heck, that's good! Anyway, I am so glad I had a chance to read this about that TV!!! VERY GLAD!! I would've said "OH-HELL" if I'd bought that Samsung instead of the "JVC 52Z575", I'm planning on getting! That is unless one of these wonderful knowledgeable people know something I don't about this TV! I will look into resurching the set you bought to replace the Samsung. I just hope the 52" set, won't be to large for my 'lil trailer of about 10'X 6'! But I couldn't get the "HD-ila" technology with a set any smaller than 50"!!! So if anybody knows anything about this or any other set in the same price range, $1,800, out the door, please feel free to let me know! Or know of another brand with all that this one has, that I may look at. Thank you for your time...Ron...

You're Putting A 52" Set In A Room 6' x 10'???!!!...
Jul 30, 2005 12:29AM PDT

...If I were you, I'd rethink that. That's WAY too big and you won't be able to take in the whole thing from where you'll be sitting. Very bad move, I'd reevaluate. 37" is probably too big. I'd go out and get a 34" high def LCD if I were you.

With a 34"-37" LCD, I wouldn't get the tehcnology I would w/
Jul 30, 2005 4:45AM PDT

You are diffently correct when you say I will probably be making a mistake by getting a 52" TV in such a small space. BUT!!!!!When I started researching DLP TV's, I didn't see anything as clear & bright as the "JVC-HD52Z575"! I saw the same set in 2 different stores(Sears-GoodGuys), so I guess I used the JVC as a basis for all the other TV's that I have been reviewing & reading about. This site & all the others included! I couldn't come up w/anything better than this technology. It is the best! DLP-LCOS-HD-ILA! I have not seen anything as good. I couldn't get that technology in a set under 50". So I guess that's why I didn't bother looking at anything under that size. I read everything about "the rainbow effect" & everything else you get w/other sets. But not w/this one. I have seen some nice LCD's but they have thier problems too. I would have to have "DLP" But....I would love to have a smaller set-but I don't think I would go under 42"-the very least. I am on a fixed income & this will be a one time only shot at getting a nice TV, & receiver, or a home theater at the same time. I would have to get something that comes w/"HDMI"! I only have so much I will be able to pay in payments, so I need to find something around 42"'s that I could get everything on it, as the JVC does! If you know of what others I should be considering, please feel free to let me know. All remarks are very very welcome! This is really driving me nuts! Now that I'm considering another size & different makers, I'm almost damn near BACK where I started!!!!!!! So, if there's anybody out there w/anything to offer, please do!!! Thanks...Ron.

What's Your Budget For The TV....
Jul 30, 2005 9:29AM PDT

...Because you can get some very sweet looking plasma 42" sets for between $2750 - 3500. If you have a chance, check out the Sony KDE-42XS955, a 42" HD (resolution 1024x1024) plasma with built in tuner, two side speakers, 25 watts each and a subwoofer with 50 watts, it can accept a cable card so you can do away with your set top box if you wish and it has an input for Sony branded digital cameras memory sticks, so you can see pictures right there on your TV screen. Available from Vanns.com for $3499 (no tax or shipping). It has an HDMI input, by the way.

Should you wait?
Jul 29, 2005 1:55AM PDT

You could always wait.

Wait for the features to be better.
Wait for the price to go down.
Wait for the new models.
Wait, wait, wait.

Or, decide what you're willing to spend and what you want it to get you in terms of function. Then make a purchase.

Sounds like you're on the fence. Depending on the impact a $2000 purchase will have on you financially you may not be in the market for a large plasma yet.

If what you are willing to spend, can't buy what you want, then wait because you'll either end up spending too much and regretting it or buying something you aren't happy with.

Happy decision making...

Sounds good to me!
Jul 29, 2005 2:41PM PDT

That's exactly where I'm at!! Considering all that I have been looking at & researching, I didn't know where I was at, till I read what you said about waiting & why!!!!! I guess I'm just waiting to be sure which TV I will end up buying,I think I already do know, till I can find the right price for which model of A/V system to match with the JVC HD-52Z575 TV! Either the new series of "RX" receivers, like the RX-D301 or RX-8040 or RX-D702! Or go with the TH-C4 series w/1,000 watts including a DVD player & speakers! I just don't want 2-3 different bills on the credit card! 1 bill for everything is pretty hard to match along with a good price through the web, It's really beginning to get me crazy! I would appreciate anything anybody has on any of this, if it makes any sence to them, your welcome. Thanks!!!!!

What is the difference?
Jul 29, 2005 7:49AM PDT

What is the difference between models? HL-P5085W and HLR5087W ?? Anything significant between the two?

Thanks

I beleive there is! A difference, that is...
Jul 29, 2005 2:51PM PDT

Without looking it up, if I remember with all that been across my face lately, I think it's that the earlier model, the 5085 came with different hook ups! Like HDMI, I think. But don't yell if I'm wrong. I'm sure either or both can be viewed here. Seems funny that the eariler model may have the HDMI & not the newer one. It is to late for me to check to find out. I'm sorry if I'm wrong. But it's been fun trying to put what concerns me with my problems & finding things out I need to know about the TV's I'm looking at the same time.. It's been a very good site to view what's being said about things that you need to know..Thank you..

I checked! There difinitelys a difference, by gollie!!!!!!
Jul 30, 2005 5:38AM PDT

I had the time to look it up @ JVC! The "HL-P5085W" is archived & is a 2004 Monitor w/the HDMI & DVI hook-ups! @ 125.4LBS The "HL-P5087W" is this yrs & it has a Digital Cable Tunner! Uses a cable car3d And weighs in at 130.1LBS! And offers the optional stand @ JVC & it weighs in at a mear 82LBS! So, there's the difference in the 2. Hope thats what ya needed! Or was it I that needed that? Who knows...
