Not as much as you think.

This was kicked around Tomshardware many times and since we'd have to change the laptop to change the SATA port, it's up to you to decide. Let me share that SSD removes seek times so my oldest iron is a 2006 Dell E1505 with 2GB RAM, Windows 10 and an 120GB SSD (cheap.)

That laptop boots and get a google web page up from COLD (not sleep) in 33 seconds.

To me this is proof enough SATA 2 would be enough.

Details matter

You gave no clues as to the "laptop model#" you have. Further, being a laptop forum suggests that the laptop must already be SATA 3 capable and not upgradeable even if the SSD is. That offers both must be currently present and once done gives the whatever is possible hopefully the ideal rating. Don't expect much if the laptop itself hasn't the SATA 3 rating or whatever you plan to do, the specs should provide these details once you visit the support website and review them. If your laptop is SATA 3 rated, then upon install of SSD, it should default to best operation -OR- provide that selection by s/w or optionable settings to include to verify what the laptop setting should be as well. Otherwise, please explain further.

sorry i don't know what happened there.
so if i'm understanding this right the port in my laptop is not able to be upgraded but a SSD or HDD are.
i didn't know anything like this before i got my SSD but my computer is much faster than with the HDD.
the Samsung magician software that came with the ssd says my laptop does not support SATA 6gb/s

I suggest you take it as is.

To change the SATA port means a new laptop. And the prior back and forth tests over SATA 2 or 3 didn't show a lot of gain.

What could be more gain for less bucks is swapping out a Samsung SSD for their higher speed Evo models. Even on SATA 2 you can see the differences.

I have just installed a samsung 850 evo and am happy with the performance.
i just wondered if i would have been able to upgrade the SATA. (i now know this to not be the case) but equally it probably wouldnt have been on the cards as the performance upgrade wouldnt have warranted it.
