Should I upgrade my current laptop, or buy a new one?

Jun 3, 2009 1:58PM PDT

I want just a little bit more from my computer, I wish I could have a desktop, buy I need something somewhat portable.

Right now I have a HP6700 that I bought a year and a half ago. It is 1.6ghz dual core, 160gb hard drive (5400rpm), 4gb of RAM (I upgraded from the 2gb originally).

I would save money to just upgrade it, but should I just buy a new one for what I need.

I would need to replace the battery ($100)

The dell that does all this for me is about $830 (CAD).

What should I do?
Replace the hard drive (about $100)
I need to replace the network card to wireless N ($40)

Is it possible to somehow get maybe a cardbus card or something that can get me a HDMI output? Or is that not even possible? Is there also a wireless card with built in bluetooth?

The HDMI is the kicker.

Here's why. I bet you want to put HD video or "play a movie or game" over that connection. There is no solution that will do that. Yes there are USB video cards that output HDMI but the low frame rate means no HD movies or games.

The battery is a constant on laptops. Just a few years for most owners so that's the cost of doing business. As to the hard disk that's a great place to gain some speed. Look at the current drive and if it's 4200 RPM replace it with 5400 RPM.

What a great question and i was facing same one with almost same machine as you hp 6000. I went back and forth with my decision and ended up getting a C q 60 210 it is a bit better then hp * faster dual core* upgraded video 128 to 256 dedicated and expanded. 2 on board memory slots with 2 gig... ( i upped it to 4 g) but this is a big but it has windows vista.....
So keep that in mind. If you do bump up your system just slightly with a newer machine say around 450 or so you will be dealing with a new to you possbily operating system.
While i made the choice to upgrade. I am not sure if i am going to keep it. I may just sell it and still use the hp 6000..... In my case animal i knew better then the new one.....
