Question

Should I update to windows 8.1

May 5, 2014 10:36AM PDT

I have Windows 8 on HP Pavilion 23 that is just over a year old. I have not updated to 8.1 and am wondering if all the "bugs" are worked out and if it is safe to update now.

I am also confused by an earlier report about Microsoft not supporting updates for 8.1?

Thank you for your help.

Answer
Well, there is no bug free OS yet.

The recent months have proven that. So if you want some assurance the bugs are worked out, history has shown us they are still in there.

You can't have a problem free OS, that's part of the fun or nature of the beast. I can only suggest the following:

1) Support for 8.0 will be less or none because of 8.1
2) If you have 8.0 now, then 8.1 is free for you
3) Image your current restore/recovery partition using the OS -OR- do step 4
4) if you haven't yet, create the restore/recovery discs/flash drive(if applicable) that HP offers(in manual)
5) 8.1 is better, if you like 8.0, go for it but do step 6
6) Create the win 8.0 restore/recovery discs of your current setup

*HINT* If you're lucky you may have a Seagate or WD HD installed, if YES, then get the support s/w from WD or Seagate. You want the Acronis version they supply(free, but limited) in order image or backup under Acronis procedures. Install and follow instructions.

You may want to have a ext. backup HD, it's aplus to have and more it if you have issues later. As always don't count on anything as backup just once, do have 3 backups in some media like CD/DVD/BD or HD/Flash if anything at least the critical data you want like pictures, docs, etc..
