Question

Should I fix XPS m1530?

Sep 15, 2011 10:55AM PDT

Just got done with an online chat with Dell support regarding a 3 year old XPS m1530 laptop which will not boot. LCD display appears to be good and we narrowed the problem down to bad memory or bad motherboard.

My question: Should I attempt to fix this laptop or not? Would the best idea be buying the memory modules to see if that's the problem? Is it worth replacing the motherboard in this computer, or will something else die on it soon?

Appreciate any thoughts.

Most likely the GPU has failed. I just had my system board replaced under warranty. The cost to replace out of warranty will be $400 or so. Tough decision. You can get a new Inspiron R15 for about $600. I just bought an R14 for my daughter, and it's a nice, responsive machine. The R15 is about as wide as an older 17" and the R14 simolar in size to the M1530

Without seeing the laptop?

I would not say. But a memory stick is so cheap compared to a new laptop that I would do that.

HOWEVER DID YOU TRY THE GENERIC RESET?

It's noted in the CNET Laptop Troubleshooting forum so the short version. Power off, remove AC, battery, press hold the power button for 60 seconds. Release, slip in battery, apply AC and try again.
