General discussion

Should i choose this or......................

hi
i have some computer parts i got from a friend. i'm thinking of upgrding but can't choose which ones.
1.) my current configuration.
P4 s478 2.8/512/800 with ht on a ga-8ipe1000 rev.1.0

2.) either p4 s775 3.2/1m/800 with HT or PD 2.66/2m/533 with em64t(or something like that) and a dual core.it's on an intel d102ggc2 mobo.

3.) an AMD sempron 3400+(2.0/128 or 256/800 hypertransport) socket 939 on a asus a8ae-le mobo.

i have sufficient cooling(coolermaster hyper tx3) and most of the necessary ram.
i mostly do high graphics and performance stuff. i'm in no mood to buy a new pc for now.

Small world.

I have that item 3 and we use that in the guest room for guests to access the internet. It's not used by my kids which speaks volumes about its speed, etc.

Item 2 while dated is what my kid used for years. We put in some PCIe Nvidia 6800 long ago and until recently that's what he played many of today's games on.

I'd focus on item 2.

The dual core.

2.) either p4 s775 3.2/1m/800 with HT or PD 2.66/2m/533 with em64t(or something like that) and a dual core.it's on an intel d102ggc2 mobo.

But here's the problem. While I know a video transcoder would win on the dual core, a gamer may want the 3.2GHz with HT.

The choice is not easy and may need benchmarking. If the old P4 didn't have HT the choice would have been easy.

HOWEVER since I use the em64t feature, my choice is the dual core with em64t.

is that a 64-bit thign? so if i have it,i cn run 64 bit os? and yes,i'm gamer. and what is benchmarking? how do i use it? where can i get it?

Just one answer.

Yes, it can run a 64 bit OS. As to what is benchmarking, try google but given I own one of the AMD Socket 939 I can warn you off that one and since my kid had the dual core I think it's the right one.

i chose the p4.
i now have to choose a graphics card. my choices are

radeon HD3870x2
radeon HD4850
evga 8800gt superclocked version
evga 9800gx2
8800gts

which do you think is the best?

Given you passed on the dual core.

I'd choose the nvidia models. I decline to write why.

ok,but......

both the ATI cards (4850 and the 3870x2) have 1+teraflops of power. the 3870 is a dual-gpu and has 1 gb and a very high bandwidth.would you suggest a evga 8800gt superclocked or maybe a 9800gx2?

And

I've seen the ATI drivers task a single core mightily. Swapped to the Nvidia and the games played on.

Hope others will chime in here.

for about the same price as an older (but still very reliable) HD3870x2 or HD4850, you could opt for one of the newer 5000 series cards, plus the newer models run much cooler than the older models.
