Should I buy the XBR960?

Mar 30, 2006 6:02PM PST

I have the opportunity to buy the SONY XBR960 for $1000 including the stand today. It is one yar old and has another two years warranty (the seller bought it with extended warranty). Should I go for it? I am looking to buy a good CRT.

For a 1000 bucks, it sounds like a good deal to me. Besides, it's an XBR, you can't go wrong unless the previous owner abused it.

What does it mean that it is XBR?

For some, XBR is the only series of sony tv's they will purchase. Sony XBR tv's are the highest series of tv's Sony makes for consumers and the most expensive. They are packed with the most features and the image quality is top notch. Most people buy Sony tv's but not many buy an XBR.

For a while, Sony decided to take it a step further and introduced the QUALIA brand (which was what a Maybach is to a Mercedes Benz). This brand was to be an ultra exclusive brand for the pimps of the world who could afford it. In its beginnings, QUALIA products were hand made and constructed of the most unusual materials for prestige and distinction. imagine a $1500.00 minidisc player that had a very heavy casing (I believe it was some kind of aluminum alloy and it was a one piece of metal), that was QUALIA.
For those of us who are lucky enough to have a
KDS-R60XBR1, we can thank QUALIA for that. Sony introduced 2 display models and one projector (that costed 30 grand!), in the QUALIA brand, one was a flat panel(plasma) (I believe it's 42 inches), and the other one was a 70" rear projection tv that looks just like the 60" xbr1 with the exception that the speakers are detachable and it costs 15,000 bucks. If you're curious about what these things look like, I would suggest checking out a Sony store if there's one nearby where you live. They have all their tv's on display and they have the QUALIA sets in there as well. Be prepared to be blown away...

So much for that info, with regards to your other question, twin view is simply sony's improved way of displaying picture in picture. you can watch two sources simultaneously (depending on how the tv is hooked up).

for example, say you have a tv with 8 inputs, and you have a high def cable box in one outputting 1080i, and a dvd player in another outputting 480p.
Once you hit the twin view, you can watch both sources simultaneously, switch the audio between one and the other, and even zoom in between one and the other to see more of one source over the other. It's kind of a cool feature.

I hope I didn't confuse you too much.
