Should I buy Area-51m 7700 for semi-portable video editing?

Oct 13, 2005 5:31AM PDT

It's heavy, but still portable enough to bring on the road. It also has TWO 7,200 RPM drives. My thinking is (a) I need fast drives and (b) I need two of them, one for media and one for software. I plan to use Adobe Premiere to edit DV.

My concerns: The Alienware Area-51m 7700 gets pretty low marks on CNET for the price. It supposedly runs quite hot too.

Has anyone had any expereinces with it? Any experiences with Adobe Premiere? Can anyone recommend alternative computers to look at? Macs only have one drive, are pretty pricy themselves, and don't have the range of other software I like on my computer, but I'll consider your arguments.

Thanks in advance!!!!

The alienware gets panned hard for spare parts and support issues. Be sure to ask around.

Alienware Service Issues, but what are the alternatives
Oct 13, 2005 7:24AM PDT

I could be wrong, but I expect that there are similar threads for other companies. So is there an alternative company offering significantly better service for a similar set-up as described in my initial posting?

And more rhetorically: Alienware is pricey - why don't they provide premium service for their premium priced computers? Anyone from Alienware out there?

G25

Doesn't the high end Toshiba have dual drives? One can also have dual HDs built into the ASUS Z70Va I beleive.... or am I missing some functionality that you need...

Let me see, Alienware or Toshiba or Asus?

I'd get the Tosh given these choices.

Remember that Alienware stories are not only here but personal. I don't want to recount my friend's story again.

G25 drives too slow.
Oct 13, 2005 9:12AM PDT

I think the drives on the G25 are less than 7,200 RPM - too slow for DV editing. Sad

look at ASUS then

I'd try Proportable, they are a highly respected reseller.

I'll sell you mind and save you alot of money. Its only 2 months old and in perfect condition.

I'm selling it because it gets too hot for gaming.

Let me know if interested.

Thanks,

Tom
