Should I buy a VCR player?

Dec 30, 2005 4:12PM PST

I do not have a DVD player or a VCR player. I know I need to get a DVD player, but I have a bunch of old VHS tapes (exercise tapes) that I want to convert to DVDs. I don't know if it's worth the money to buy a new VCR player now just to convert these tapes. What is the best strategy for investing in these devises? Thanks,

DVD/VCR combo
Jan 1, 2006 2:35AM PST

Some manufacturers (Sony, Pansonic, Toshiba etc) make players that come with a DVD and VCR (combo). You can play the DVDs and playback your VHS tapes without any problems.

That said, this DVD/VCR combo wont be future proof. There will be new DVD formats coming out in a few months (years) in which ths DVD/VCR combo won't be able to playback - in which you'll probably need to buy again a new player to playback these new DVD formats.

Good VHS decks are super cheap these days. I see them new

for less than $100. They can also be purchased used on eBay. I got a Super VHS machine when I bought one for the computer. If you mean something like a mini-DV player, they are extremely expensive. If would use the camera as the playback device rather than a ply back deck.
