General discussion

should i buy a new computer or upgrade?

Apr 21, 2005 5:35AM PDT

hello people,

i am the owner of an old dell dimension xps. it has a 600 mhz pentium 3 processor. i really enjoy gaming but i was thinking that maybe instead of buying a new computer i could get a good ati or nvidia graphics card (256 mb) and maybe 1 gig of kingston memory. my question is, do you think that would be good enough to enjoy some games or is it time for a new computer?

thanks,

I suspect

that trying to upgrade that machine to even a mid-range gamer would be quite expensive and frustrating.

Keep in mind that one thing leads to an other and then to an other etc.

You could build your own if your into that sort of thing.

You could shop around at your favorite vendors looking at their mid-range line.

You could go to alienware and drop 5K on one of their screamers.

Bottom line don't go pumping a bunch of bucks into that old machine.

I agree

A new machine is the only way to go. Your's is ancient and the required rebuild would cost you more than say, the eMachines T6212. $629.9 before $50 rebate at Best Buy and Circuit City!

Yep, for high end gaming....

Hi ifms,

The latest high end games require at least 1000MHz (Doom3 is 1.5GHz) so a high end video card and lots of RAM will do no good.

The cost of converting your 600MHz would pay for a cheapo modern PC.

One of my desktops is 500MHz and can play most games, but not the latest high end.

Yes so much has changed that almost any new PC you would buy would be 4 times fater than what you have.
There is a bible verse that says " don't put new wine in old wine skins" I feel that this applies to PCs as well. John
