General discussion

Should I be concerned?

Oct 7, 2006 5:51PM PDT

I have been downloading a few font files from sites such as dafont.com for use in school projects.

While trouble shooting the failure to install a certain font collection into font book I had the occasion to open the Library/Font Collections folder and found a Unix Executable File (that is what the find info function identifies it as). The file is named Fixed Width.collection. I installed a series of type faces with that quality but did not use that exact name in creating a new collect to store them in. Spotlight search shows it only in the Library/Font Collections folder.

? Did I create this file?
or...
? Did the file get installed with some font I downloaded?
? What is it?
? Can a Unix Executable file present a security risk? Should I worry?
? Should I leave it or throw it away?

iBook G4 1.2 ghz - os 10.4.8

Thanks for any advice in advance!

Also... I'm looking for a font that looks like the roman font used on stone carvings found on buildings and public monuments. Some thing with a 3 dimensional look so that I can use it on what looks like a stone back ground. I can rasterize it and aff the final touches to make it look like actual carved text but I can't find the right font to begin with. If anyone can give me any idea where I can find such a font I would appreciate it. Thanks for the help Happy

Answer to Part One

did a spotlight search and have the same file in the same place. I do not download fonts from any sort.

That file exists in that folder and is part of the Font Management System.

Last week, I installed a copy of Photo Elements 4.0
The Fixed Width.collection file is noted as a Bridge Collection file, even though it already existed on the system, and is used by the Bridge portion of Photo Elements.

I think you are safe with that one.

BTW, the font you are probably looking for is "Really Old Times Old Roman" or not.

question...Do Unix executable files act like windows exec files?

Unix Executable files

When double clicked, that particular one does nothing.
I suspect it is rather like a DLL file that only does something when called by another program.
The icon is that "Terminal" thing until there is an application that will use it. My file has a Photo Elements Bridge icon and not the generic Unix one.

My TurboTax files looked like that until I installed the program

Speaking of suspicious, at every startup my little snitch now informs that my new stuffIt deluxe is trying to install a ''foreign'' exe that ''could be a security risk. is this another one of those non-problem, problems dya think ?

I think I would set that to DENY at every opportunity.

Follow the instructions to block it.

Those turtles look dangerous too, Dude!
