Question

Should a vehicle in motion be a cell free zone?

Jul 8, 2017 9:43AM PDT

I think yes, a device that activates to block all cell as soon as a vehicle is put in motion.

How many people 'really' have a need to be using a cell device while operating a motor vehicle?

I see so many people driving with a cell phone in their ear and their not paying any attention to the road or traffic.

If you really need to use your cell pull over and stop.
Then you can chat your brains out.

I agree but don't have answer for how

to make folks put them down and drive with both hands on the wheel. Today, it's not the phone in the ear that's the bigger problem but the device being uses for texting purposes. At least, while on the phone, only one hand is needed. It's not that hard to spot a driver who isn't paying as much attention to their driving than to some other activity. Automobile safety features seem to be being geared more toward absolving a driver from the need to keep their eyes on the road and their vehicles in their own lanes. Folks will feel plenty more comfortable texting when knowing their car will warn them if they are drifting into someone or failed to see that the person in front of them is braking. There's something about that I don't like.
All of the TV ads advocating against distracted driving seem to be for naught and making cell phone use illegal does little. No one pays attention to stop signs and few people properly use their turn signals. So what lawmaker thinks a person will worry about being ticketed for using their hand held for any purpose?
Instead of making them so they'd disable a vehicle when in use, I'd rather make them explode and take off a few fingers...arresting office, judge, jury and punishment all in one second. Wink

Cell

I would think that a device to block cell when the vehicle is in motion could be installed on every vehicle sold in this country.

Then there's no reason to have the cell in your ear or be texting.

If the vehicle is in motion the cell does not work.

Now your brains are on driving.

Any such device

would be for new car sales only. You'd need to deal with developing standards so that what's in the car works with all devices. This would likely affect all passengers in the vehicle as well as the driver. Unless you could require a retrofit, you'd have millions of cars on the road for many years to come that would not make use of that technology. And, by the time they were off the road, the whole technology scene would change again. Perhaps cell phones, as we know them now, wouldn't even exist.
It's perhaps a nice thought but I can't imagine the tens of millions of cups of coffee and donuts that would need to be consumed before putting such a plan into place.

You are correct

It would only apply to new vehicle sales, which looks to about 15 million per year.

Should not take too many years for that to make a dent.

You can't get people to voluntarily not use the thing while driving so you have to force it.

We have laws in this state to prohibit cell usage while driving.
People just ignore it and the police don't enforce it.

I have no idea what tech we'll be using in 10 years.

quit picking on phones

yes phones are a problem, but so is putting on makeup, shaving, eating, drinking, changing the cd, changing the radio station, dropping something, staring at the half naked blond in the next car over, yelling at kids and more.

Distracted driving

Phones are just one of the many areas for this problem.

We can do something about phones but I doubt much can be done about makeup, shaving or hollering at the kids.
