Shot entirely on DSLR with no budget...

Jan 9, 2011 1:25PM PST

I'm posting this here because I think that it's a great way to show off what DSLRs can do for filmmakers with very little budget. I recently shot this music video on DSLR:

I hope you all enjoy. My band is Vertigo Venus, we're from Albuquerque, NM, and this is the Video for "Everybody Down", off our latest album, "SOS". We shot this video in eight hours on three SLR cameras with the help of some great people. I edited it in Sony Vegas. I encourage any band who wants a music video to look into shooting on SLR and taking some time in the production. Even though we did this in very little time, we worked very hard leading up to it.

We shot on two Canon 5D MK II's, and one Nikon D7000. Lighting kit was a basic three box, a couple worklights. Shot three takes at once on three different setups, then edited it all in Sony Vegas Pro 10. Very little color correction, much of this is Raw to keep the look.

Our DP was Rip Williams, a local photographer who's quite awesome.

You CAN have the big studio look, without the money. This is the proof. Enjoy!

definately a DSLR

Hi,

Let me start off by saying that it was a lot better quality than I was expecting. That said it was obvious to me that it was shot with a DSLR or consumer grade camcorder.

The first thing I noticed was the camera shake when zooming in and out. Now it wasn't bad and very few people would probably notice it, but I did. DSLR's are not designed to zoom in and out while taking pics which is why the shake. Again very minor, but there.

Keep in mind most consumer grade camcorders will shoot in HD now.

The SLR's you mentioned were used are professional grade and you said you used a local photographer. It definately shows in the quality of your video.

I would have liked to have seen a little better quality in lighting (unless that was the look you were trying to achieve).

Didn't care too much for the band or the music but that is just me. However, I was quite impressed with the quality of your video and editing. On a scale of 1-10 I would rate your video a 8.5

Good job on a limited budget.

DOF

I found the Depth of Field (DOF) interesting.
Something you seldom see with any video.
The video-photographer did not have it totally under control.
But that is probably because he has not had to worry about DOF before.

Some of the close-ups looked particularly good, because of the shallow DOF.
It opens up a lot of possibilities for anyone wanting to use it to their advantage.
As for the band and music ... I agree with technut81.
About half way through I had to mute the sound.
