Shortest Click to Capture Time?

Nov 23, 2004 12:42AM PST

Good Day. I am looking to purchase a new digital camera for photographing my very active two year old. I currently own an older Nikon - the Coolpix 775, and was happy with it until my son became very active. Now I have lots of photos of one arm or the top of his head! I'm looking for a camera with very quick click to capture time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

For the absolute shortest click-to-capture times, what you really want is a digital SLR, but that's probably way more than you really want to pay.

I'd recommend the Kodak EasyShare DX7630 ($300), which has a short click-to-capture time and is also easy to use. CNET has a review of it, and both Steve's Digicams and DC Resource say that the shutter lag is practically nonexistent.

NOTE: The Kodak EasyShare DX7440, which is similar to the DX7630, is a bit cheaper but has a very weak flash. I wouldn't recommend it at all for indoor shooting, and besides it tends to smudge details together.

Check out the Kodak DX7440.

One of the shortest shutter lags around.

0.1 seconds with prefocus.
0.2 seconds without prefocus.

Review is here:

Note: this is the Conclusion page of the review, there are other pages, including sample photos.

This camera also has manual over-rides for most functions. Or you can run fully automatic.

Kodak DX7440 -- very weak flash
Nov 23, 2004 11:37PM PST

In Imaging Resource's flash tests for the Kodak DX7440, the camera's flash barely illuminated the test target at 8 feet and is underpowered. I'd recommend the similar DX7630, which has the same click-to-capture time, according to Steve's Digicams.

DC Resource recently reviewed the DX7440 and said its images often have smudged details and sometimes strange exposures.

All in all, I recommend the Kodak DX7630, a very good family camera. For an ultra-compact, try the Canon SD300 or Sony DSC-T1 (both weak flashes) or, for a more advanced one, the Konica Minolta DiMage Z3.

I suggest that you try the following cameras :
Fuji F700, Fuji E550
casio QV-R40, QV-R50, QV-R51, QV-R52.
These are very fast cameras to boot up, and very fast to capture images.
