General discussion

shortcut will not work

Nov 24, 2004 2:12AM PST

I have a shortcut on my desktop to take me to Flashquotes (a website for stock quotes). When I click on it now, it quickly shows the title page of the website and then just as quickly closes it. What is happening? I've tried to install a new shortcut but the same thing happens. I am using Windows 98. Agnes

domo,

Just some thoughts....

Is this happening in Internet Explorer? Which version are you using?

Are there any error messages?

Is the link opening "Minimized"? After opening the shortcut and when is closes, is there a minimized website in the lower taskbar? Can you open it from there? If so, then you need to train the shortcut link to open it in a normal window.

It's possible the actual URL for the site has changed slightly..Instead of using the shortcut, can you access the site normally from the Internet?

Hope this helps and let us know more.

This is happening in Netscape. There is no error message. There is no icon in the lower task bar. When I click on the icon in my favorites, the following URL is listed - //quotes.nasdaq.com/quote.dll? I have been playing around with this problem for some time. The last time I tried the icon in my favorites, I GOT IT. So I copied the URL on that page, made a new folder in My Favorites, tried it again and it won't work. The URL on that page was //quotes.nasdaq.com/quote.dll?mode+stock&page=quick&symbol

Domo, The URL Needs To Be Corrected...

I can't access either one of the URL's that you have posted. The URL below gets you to the main page though:

http://quotes.nasdaq.com/

If this is the correct page, then simply edit the link.

HOpe this helps.

I was able to get to the correct website following your directions. Again I entered my information on the page where you list the stocks you want to keep track of. Created a shortcut and the new shortcut does the same thing. Is it possible that this "freebie" is no longer a "freebie" and therefor will never work again unless I sign up to be a paying member? Can't figure it out.

Domo, I Think It's The Website...

If you can connect correctly by accessing the website, then navigating to the secondary URL by posting information, then it's probably the URL that's causing the issue. Some sites won't allow a direct link to secondar links especially when it requires additional information to find your specific page. IN that case, you'll be better off if you create a shortcut to the homepage of that website. You'll then need to navagate to the separate page each time.

Hope this helps.

What happens if you ...

type the target of the shortcut (the url-address of flashquotes) in the address bar of your default browser)? Or make it a favorite and choose it?
By the way, what is your default browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape or Mozilla or Opera or ...)?
And, just to share, what's the url?
