TweakUI is no help?

Strange, because that is how those shortcut arrows get lost in the first place. It's an option in TweakUI. Reverse that, and they should come back.

What clock language example?

jigsaw_red, Try the following:

Right-click the Desktop, choose Properties
Click the Appearance Tab.
Click Advanced button
Choose Icon from the drop-down list
Set it's size to 32 (default size) and click OK, OK.
