Short-n-Simple for Julie... IM/EMAIL

Mar 5, 2006 2:34AM PST

Hi Julie.
I hope this helps you in plain talk. We all started at one time or another and with Comps, there is always something to learn.....and it's going to get tougher. You don't need abbrev., and big words you don't understand. One girl asked me what WWW stood for. So no question is to stupid to ask. ASK AWAY.
One thing about comps., is that there are so many seconds when any message is sent anywhere. It's quick, and little scary windows pop up out of no where. ??????
1.)Instant messaging (IM)---A type of communication server that enables you to create a kind of private chat room with another individual, in order to communicate in REAL-TIME over the internet, by using text based, not voice-based, communication. DOS and UNIX are not real time. Real time occurs immediately, it responds to input instantly.
Typically, the IM alerts you whenever someone on your private list is online. You can also block someone.

2.) Email or electronic mail transmits messages over communications networks. Basically, email can be sent anywhere in the world. Email is fast, flexible, reliable and very popular, especially with businesses.
Many circumstances can slow a computers speed down/internet response. Slowness in Internet response is generally due to the speed of your connection, a memory shortage, memory leak, high traffic at your internet service provider(ISP). And women sending a 2 page recipe to their friend, ha ha. Pictures/graphics, files, games and the list goes on. Dial-up----BAD. Cable/DSL---Good. Again it's your preference. I don't use an IM, maybe later. I stick with simple email. I use to have yahoo messenger since 2002.
I do have yahoo email/ Verizon yahoo mail! Remember--> IBM COMPATIBLE, that is a computer/computer system that can use the same software/components, etc.
I have a Compaq AMD Sempron and running Windows XP Home(SP2). Microsoft internet explorer 6 and Outlook Express 6, which is my email program. I read up alot and study and at one point I was employed with IBM. I regret not staying cause I put together huge computers, learned the sorter, verifier and key punch. It was real interesting but I couldn't do it now.
The only IM I will use is Yahoo..a.k.a the 'Bad Boys' of the internet. My default Email Program is Outlook Express6 which comes with Internet Explorer6. My anti-virus is Avast(free).
www.avast.com ---- www.pctools.com Check these sites out, it won't hurt.

Manufactures will put default in the comp before it's purchased, so always know the specifications beforehand. There will be some things in there you will never use...check them out, then take them out.
Just be careful what you remove.
The best thing we can do is put down the abbrev., words, phrases ,etc., that we hear/see often on a legal pad and look it up.
It's hard to tell/help someone else when you can't see their monitor. Good luck and help is closer than you think.
