Sharing internet, cannot share files or printer....

Aug 18, 2005 11:11AM PDT

I have an HP desktop, P4 1GB RAM & a HP laptop with 802.11b/g wireless access. Both running XP Home with SP2 and even the latest MS patches. I have a Linksys wireless router. I was previoulsy able to share internet, folders and printer. However, recently all I can do is share the internet. I'm not sure what has changed. I've scanned my system numerous times for spyware, malware, viruses, etc. and found nothing, using PC-Cillin IS 2005 (installed on both machines), Symatec (online), A-squared, Ad-aware, and Spybot. At this point, I don't think something sinister made changes or corrupted the networking.

I have used the Network Wizard - nothing. Basically, my two pc's cannot see each other. I've tried to ping each other via their IP addresses; however, they time out - not able to see the other pc. I've also tried to ping each other using their respective pc names - nothing. They can ping and find themselves, but that's no help. Both pc's are on in the same group - MSHOME and both have different names - DESKTOP and LAPTOP (I am simple.) I have spent countless hours searching forums, Microsoft support, etc. Nothing found to really address this issue. I have not turned off my PC-Cillin firewall; however, this was not a problem before. I've also turned off the windows firewall completely. Nothing seems to be working. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty much a novice at this, so please be patient and think in simple terms. Thank you!!

First I would check the ......

IP and Subnet numbers to see if they are in the same range.

Then I would drop that firewall or set it to allow LAN traffic through.

Use ipconfig and ping

It sounds like your network components haven't been introduced to each other.

1) Go to each system and open command prompt. By either start->programs->accessories->command prompt, or go to run and type in cmd

2) From a cmd prompt window, type ipconfig /all. This command will display your network info. Make sure that the ip address are within range and what you expect (i.e. 192.168.1.X where x can be from 0 to 256).

3) For each computer, perform a loopback test. Type ping 127.0.0.1 (this is HOME in TC/IP). If it fails your adapter may have to be re-installed. Then, ping the IP address obtained from ipconfig.

4) After the loopback test, ping the other members of your network (i.e. ping the router, ping the laptop). The other systems should appear in Computers Near Me

Something so easy....

The pinging wasn't happening. So........after several days and hundreds of forums and thousands of "tweaks". I turned off PC-Cillin's firewall. Guess what? The pc's were now communicating. I've reinstalled my firewall and all is well. Something happened to corrupt the firewall. Thank you for your help and advice!!
