Question

Sharing Files & Folders on two computers on my home network

Apr 18, 2019 3:51PM PDT

My home network consists of two Win 10 computers connected to an Arris model TG1682G WiFi Router. One of the computers is connected to the Internet by way of an ethernet cable between that computer and the router, and the second computer is connected through the wireless network which is includes the Arris router.
In the past 4 or 5 years this configuration has allowed me to store files on an external hard drive connected to the computer with ethernet; and store an application (Quicken) on the computer with a wireless connection and then run the application with the data because I can see both computers in File Explorer\Network.

Now I cannot see each computer from the other computer's File Explorer\Network.
? Should I still be able to see the other computer? I am now using Win 10 Version 1809.

?Must I add the ethernet connected computer to the wireless network? If so, how is it done?

? Is there an easier way to accomplish my former work environment with data on one computer and the app on the other computer? If so, again, how is it done?

Adding an ethernet computer to a wireless network
Apr 19, 2019 8:07AM PDT

Hello M. or M. Proffitt,
Many thanks for your prompt reply. I just read the Amixa article you referenced and will follow through on it and how to set the firewall in the TG1682. But, I am still way behind where you are.
1. I have not even created a network that includes both of my computers described above. Can I add my ethernet computer to the existing wireless network to which my wireless computer is included? If so, how can I do it? My understanding or misunderstanding is that both computers must be part of the same wireless network. Please help me. Thanks.

I can't answer.

I know that in a normal router setup the computers on WiFi and Ethernet are on the same LAN so there is nothing to do to get that to work. But it appears something is different with your TG1682.

I did note that the firewall does interfere with WiFi and Wired operations in a sticky in the networking forum. When that happens you must adjust the firewall to lower or off. This firewall is not that great or good of an idea if it breaks normal operations.

Adding an ethernet computer to a wireless network
Apr 19, 2019 3:16PM PDT

Hello Mr. or Ms. Proffitt,
Again many thanks for your assistance. At this time I must cry 'uncle' and go on to a less desirable, but functional solution to satisfy my needs. That would be to connect a thumb drive to the computer with the Quicken application and down load the monthly data to that computer. Not very sophisticated, but practical.

The things I have read about fixing the networking problem are too sophisticated for my knowledge level and I don't wish to corrupt the network capabilities I currently have.

Again, thanks for your help

Regards, Bill Taggart

Map the drives
Apr 19, 2019 5:30PM PDT

Ever since 1709 my 4 computers (2 Win 7 Pro & 2 Win 10 Pro) have been very random about all computers showing up under Network in File explorer. My solution was to Map the drives on all computers so that I have access to all of them whether they show up under network or not.
Do a google search on how to map the drives. Note: be sure that your settings are ok in Network & Sharing center and make sure that you set all your drives sharing to whatever you want to share.

Map the Drives

Hello Lumpy 95. Many thanks for taking your time to help me. I tried using the mapped drive Z:=\the other computer\shared folder and unfortunately it does not work for me. There is a message saying that the other computer is not on the network.
Can you tell me a bit more about "settings are ok in Network & Sharing center" specifics? I am not a strong network person, but at one time this network and sharing arrangement did work. I just don't know the specifics today.
Thanks again.
