The router is connected directly to the switch .

Too little information.

As it stands, with what's written, I can't see the error.

Here's a typical home network.

1. Cable/dsl modem with ethernet connected to...

2. Dlink/linksys NAT capable "router." serving..

3. PCs, switches and hubs.

TO get sharing to work, all I have ever needed to know is to share something on one PC, have the WORKGROUP the same name and only use TCPIP. Some try to add other protocols, but I can't help them.

And some add firewalls, but I can't help them either. Add the firewall after you get it working.

The above setup would use DHCP or "obtain an address automatically."

You must provide more information. Networking involves many variables. For instance, are the computers all using the same filing system, such as FAT32? Or are some NTFS? FAT32 can be read by NTFS, but FAT32 can not "see" an NTFS system. Are all the operating systems the same, or is it a "mixed mode" network? Based on your information, though, no one can give you any substantial advice. Extensive details would be required, because we can't see what you have or how it's set up.

With your limited information, I'll hazard a guess. When using XP's networking wizard to setup a lan, by default XP's firewall is enabled-did you double check that XP's firewall isn't enabled? On my Pro system, for some mysterious reason, it enables itself; I then just disable it. You can also try a release and renew from the command prompt: in the RUN box, type cmd, then enter. At the command line window, type ipconfig /release, then enter, then ipconfig /renew. For further information, a good site is: http://www.practicallynetworked.com . Good luck.

And btw, on a network, you can have fat32 and NTFS. I have a Win98 system on my network, and 2 XPs. No problem in file sharing.
