Sharing a Broadband (AOL) Connection through Wireless.Help?!

Oct 24, 2004 3:59AM PDT

I'm thinking of getting AOL broadband on a desktop pc which is sitatued in my Dad's home office (which is really just the garage of our house converted). the thing is, i wanna share the connection with my laptop but i have a few questions.

1. What exactly do i need to get it working? i already have an 802.11b wireless pc card that i got with my laptop.

2. What is the likely range that ill be able to connect to my Dad's connection through wireless? his office is a detached building roughly 30yrds from where im hoping to use the connection (in in a house next door) So essentially the connection would have to travel through 2 walls at a distance of about 30rds. Is this possible?

3. I live in the U.K(N.Ireland) if this makes any difference.

I'd greatly appreciate some help on this as i wanna be sure of what i can and cant do beofre i order broadband. thanks.

Trial and error is the operation that applies here.
Situate a wireless router to the nearest point and see what kind of signal exists. Antenna extenders and other goodies may help. Security should definitely be a concern with this type of setup.

thanks michael, ill give it a shot. Have you any idea what sort of wireless router i need? is there more than one type? as i say, im pretty unfamiliar with the wi-fi. I'm aware of the security concerns wiht wireless connections but my current net connection is abysmal so ill take the risk!

Really just about anything from the usual consumer oriented vendors will do. Linksys, D-Link, Netgear all offer products which work with most if not all wireless adapters. I usually pick whatever is on sale.

Get a signal booster or a high-gain antanae to boost your signal for your router.
And get a Wireless 'G' router, not 'B'.
