Question

SH5 Soundbar issues

Dec 19, 2016 3:30AM PST

I have a brand new LG SH5 soundbar and a Sony kdl-32w706bsu tv. Yesterday I unpacked the soundbar, plugged it in and connected to my TV using a new HDMI 2.0 cable. I selected the "audio system" sound option in my TV instead of the TV speakers and the soundbar worked perfectly. We watched TV for a while with the soundbar working well. However, when we came to watch TV again later I turned the TV on but there was no sound coming from the soundbar. I noticed that it had turned itself to OPT instead of HDMI when it had been turned on by the TV. I turned it to HDMI but when I turned the TV back to audio system the bar instantly defaulted to OPT. After ~10mins of fiddling I got the sound to work. This morning, the same thing happened, on power up the bar was set to OPT and not HDMI, but now I can't get it to work at all.

Answer
That sounds like ARC

HDMI ARC is like that. Hit and miss. Try other connections and setups. If you feel it's defective, pack and return. The industry is not doing well with ARC.

ARC

You could well be correct about it being the ARC that's playing up. It works fine via Optical but of course it doesn't power up/down along with the tv via optical, and nor does the TV remote work for the volume as it does with the ARC.

Which is why

I went with a power bar and an analog connection. My TV analog output goes up and down with the TV remote so that works great. To power down this item I used a smart power bar that detects the TV going off and cuts power to peripherals.
