Several Windows XP Problems!

by Jokerguy / July 22, 2005 3:39 AM PDT

Okay, first I'll start off by saying that I used Spybot Search and Destroy to remove any spyware off of my computer and I removed the neglectable file as well...Well after that I tried doing a virus scan which AOL provided and it said I was missing a file and I need to reinstall the security, I uninstalled and reinstalled McAfee several times without I decided to search for any files of McAfee using the windows search from the Start Menu...when I click on it an error window pops up stating "A file that I required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to run setup." I tried going into the windows files and right clicking the certain file for search companion and reinstalling it, still with no luck...So I figured I could use System Restore to reinstall any files that may have been deleted...I open up System comes up stating "System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run System Restore again" Did that about a good dozen times, still with nothing. I'm running a Windows XP Home edition that was preinstalled on my computer, so I have no physical disk. I believe I have some files in the I386 folder that are missing. Any suggestions? Anything at this point would help. Thanks

When you say "it said I was missing a file" I assume it's McAfee... what's the name of the file?.
When you know that... open Spybot and go to recovery... the file in question should be there.
What I'm confused about is why you were searching for the file in and uninstalling and installing McAfee when the file is question seems to belong to an add on, a search bar that you may have d/l and installed it.
I suspect that "Search Companion" has some kind of tracking software that comes close to or is spyware (that's why Spybot pick it up). Before you just add the file back, you may want to run a search on google for the file in question (pay close attention to the spelling), and see what it does. You may be at risk from the spyware or worse, if that's the case just uninstall the full program "Search Companion" NOT McAffe.
About the restore disk... if the system didn't come
with a restore disk, to make 1 was of outmost importance as soon as you had the system up and running... you may be able to stil do it... look in the computer's manual or you may have to purchase a copy from the computer's maker.
