Several Install Issues

May 19, 2010 10:58PM PDT

I'm having trouble installing Java 6 Update 18 as well as FileFormatConverter.exe on my wife's computer.

The error message that I get with the fileformatconverter.exe program is "The patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package." I downloaded the file directly from the Microsoft download site. This program is supposed to allow her to open the newer Microsoft Office documents. We do have an older version installed that we are trying to overwrite. Is there an easy way to figure out which version she has on her computer?

The other issue is with Java. Every time I try to run the Java 6 Update 18 I'm told that "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." Then it wants me to find the 'jre1.6.0_11-c.msi' file. I've tried to go to Sun/Oracle and download the update manually, use the updater, and update by updating Open Office but every time I get the same message.

What can I do to solve these issues?

Thanks.

Try.

1. Tell the author about the install bug on file converter.

2. On Java I found many times if I uninstall all versions of Java then install their latest that fixes it. This might not help those that don't want to do that.

There's A Newer, More Secure Version Of Java- Update 20
May 20, 2010 1:45AM PDT

Try installing it using the instructions below which involve the full offline installer, and YES, you'll want to uninstall all previous versions at the appropriate time.:

Click on the link to Sun's Java below, then scroll down to the "Java Platform, Standard Edition" section in the upper part of the page, next to "JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE)" and click on the "Download JRE" download button. At the next page, select the Windows platform, make sure the "Language" is correct, accept the license agreement, then click on the "Continue" button. Next, download the full ''Windows OFFLINE Installation'' file to your desktop,(about 15 MB), scan it with your antivirus (just to be sure it's clean). Once that's done, if you've already got a Sun Java version on the computer, open the Control Panel, double click on the ''Add/Remove Programs'' section, then uninstall ALL previous versions of the J2SE Java listed there. Once that's done, then install Java JRE 6u20 from the downloaded installer.

Hope this helps.

Tried This?

Use the link below to download the Office Compatibility Pack installer (FileFormatConverters.exe).. Download the file to your desktop, close all open programs, including your browser and temporarily disable your antivirus, then simply double click on the file to install it. If it doesn't install, please tell us EXACTLY what happens and any EXACT error messages you see.

After installing the program, be sure to visit the Windows Updates site and install any updates required for the Compatibility Pack

Hope this helps.
