ifconfig and cat /etc/resolv.conf commend if in cli. It should be in GUI somewhere too.
I typed the ifconfig command and it displayed three things. eth0,lo and wlan0. What should I do now?
It means your net cards are working well. Wireless and LAN.
But it is hard to tell what is wrong then. You inserted cable and everything is really OK with it?
You can try to manually dhcp it:
sudo dhclient eth0
But this should not be necessary.
I'll tell you some more things about my internet. After plugging in the lan wire, I have to visit a website and download a software that allows me to connect to the internet after I provide my username and password to it. But that webpage isn't opening on ubuntu.
You should contact your network providers with your issue.
Possible that they are blocking non IE access to their page, that is very bad practice in general. On example mobile phone you want to connect.
Hi, I am struggling to set up my Lan connection for the internet, I am using Ubuntu 11.04.
How would I go about this from GUI....network tools page?
It should work automatically.
If not check system network settings. It is simpler than windows just different place.
Download a software or just a pop window that allows you to log in. In the same way some WiFi Hot Spots are done. IF that is the case, make sure the Pop Up blocker is activated for that page. If you use Fire Fox, you will see a bar that say block or allow on this site.
Also, you could tray Mandriva One Live CD with KDE desktop. In order to get the IP Address of your machine is as simple as hovering the mouse pointer on the icon next to the clock for the Internet connection. A pop up will come up saying that is active and what IP Address you have on what Network Card.
