Setup has detected...

Nov 26, 2003 11:37PM PST

Windows 98SE.

In spite of being told not to, my daughter downloaded and installed Grokster and a whole bunch of other thigs, she knows not what on her Windows 98 machine. I ran an AdAware scan and found 512 objects, including browser hijackers and data miners, Gator and a bunch of like things which I got rid of. I'm planning further scanning with other programs, but the problem I want to ke care of is that every time the computer is booted I get this message:

"Setup has detected that you are running a version of Windows that already includes the updated files or enhancements you are attempting to install.

"For more information click Details. Click Cancel to return to Windows 98."

I get a Cancel and Details button (which tells me that I am trying to install an older version of IE, which I am not). There is a grayed out Run Program button. There's a checkbox for "Don't show this message" but of course since I have to hit Cancel it doesn't apply.

The message dialog has IExplore.exe in the title bar.

Does this look familiar? Obviously something is trying to install IE 5 but I can't figure out what. I've unchecked IE Driver in under the Startup tab in msconfig and that stops it, but is this the best thing to do? Whatever it is must still be on the machine I'm betting.

Thanks.

How about a fresh install?

Backup valuable things, format hd, install Windows AND necessary drivers, find a download site for IE 5.5 if you don't have it on CD, reinstall applications, restore valuable things from backup, and you'll have a nice clean fast reliable machine.
A restore CD from the maker would speed things up.

Then tell your daughter she may do it herself next time if she still doesn't listen. And let her bake a good apple pie to thank you for all your work.

It may come to that but I'd rather avoid this chore for a while yet if I can.

I suppose you could take a look at the following registry address for something similar to an install for IE and see if there is any indication of path of where something is located -- check all of the addresses starting with Run. If found and you do decide to delete any folder found, you may as well remove that entry as well so that it no longer displays in MSCONFIG:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
