I agree about the CNET review, considering the D8000/7000 along with the Panasonic VT30 are the most anticipated 2011 TV's for videophiles. I purchased the PN59D8000 about a month ago and it came with the 3D starter kit. I really enjoy the 2D picture quality of the set, however I am still attempting to dial in my settings. Most calibrated settings are too dull for my taste, I will post my current favorite settings when I get back home. My main issue is that I like the Standard mode but it seams that it introduces some flickering (even with dynamic contrast turned off), which disappears in movie mode (with dc on). The other two modes (vivid and relax) do not have enough settings to control the picture properly.
The general consensus is that plasmas no longer need a break in period prior to watching in order to prevent IR and or burn in. Some people continue to run break in slides as a precaution but mostly because they are interested in calibrating their TV or having it professionally calibrated. It is recommended that you have at least 200 hours of viewing time on your TV before calibration, to allow for all of the phosphorus colors to age evenly.
If you are interested in in depth discussion on these topics you should check out avsforum.com. There is a setting thread for the D8000/7000 and an owners forum. Here is the link to the settings forum:

I would suggest running break in slides over night (which is what I am currently doing), after all it cant hurt anything. Here is a link for the slides I am running, just download to a thumb drive and plug in to your TV's USB. Make sure they take up the whole screen before running.

Here is a link to a free calibration dvd and manual. It is very good for calibrating without equipment, you shouldn't need any color filters because the D8000/7000 has a red/blue/green only mode in the advanced settings. You can actually use the disk for calibrating with equipment but if you were going to go that far I would suggest getting the calman software or just pay a professional to do it.
