"should I update the older computer to Windows XP before I set it all up? Or is Windows XP even compatible with a 500 Mhz computer?"
Xp will run on the specs you offer but a visit to the Compatibility website may be worth it. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx
"Does the fact that the two computers have different operating systems going to affect anything??"
For most things no.
"Will we be allowed to share files through this network too?"
Absolutely.
Here is situation. I have never set up a home newtwork before but it is time I try. I have to get my kids off my computer that is used for my business/work. I recently purchased a router & wireless adapter for my 2 computers. My computer, which is 2 years old but still is fine for now, is a Pent IV, 2.0 GHz, 40 GB, 256 MB on Windows XP Home Edition with cable internet through RoadRunner. My older computer which I gave to my kids is a Pent III, 500 MHz, 13 GB, 128 MB on Windows 98 Second Edition. The main purpose for the network is to allow them internet access. Here is one of my concerns....should I update the older computer to Windows XP before I set it all up? Or is Windows XP even compatible with a 500 Mhz computer? Does the fact that the two computers have different operating systems going to affect anything?? Will we be allowed to share files through this network too? Sorry if some of these questions sound basic, but I just do not know the answers and that is why I am here.
Thanks,
