And flow? CNET wrote that 5.1 sound rarely passes. No technical reason why, it's patents and interpretation of da'rules.

Doesn't matter if it's a sound bar or receiver.

I have an HDTV, a receiver (that does not have an HDMI port) and a FIOS set-top box. I plan to connect the set-top box to the HDTV directly via HDMI cable. I plan to use an SP/DIF optical cable to conned tty TV with the receiver for audio only. Question: if I use the FIOS set-top box, will the sound flow through to my receiver to my speakers? Or do i need a direct connection between the FIOS set-top box and the receiver?
The reason I am not having a direct connection with the receiver is that the receiver is old and does not have an HDMI port.
Thanks!
David
