Question

Setting up TV Receiver Set-top box

Jan 21, 2015 9:57AM PST

I have an HDTV, a receiver (that does not have an HDMI port) and a FIOS set-top box. I plan to connect the set-top box to the HDTV directly via HDMI cable. I plan to use an SP/DIF optical cable to conned tty TV with the receiver for audio only. Question: if I use the FIOS set-top box, will the sound flow through to my receiver to my speakers? Or do i need a direct connection between the FIOS set-top box and the receiver?

The reason I am not having a direct connection with the receiver is that the receiver is old and does not have an HDMI port.

Thanks!

David

That's not what he's doing though

He's just splitting the Audio & Video, sending each from a FiOS box to a different device. Simultaneous dual audio ouput is no problem on 98% of the set top boxes used in the marketplace today because of the detail he shared regarding the lack of HDMI on his older receiver. FiOS should work the same way as my Comcast DVR & DirecTV receiver. The 5.1 sound has always worked great connecting it this way on my older gear/receivers. Even my newer WDTV Live media streamer can pass HDMI to the HDTV and 5.1 to the receiver via a separate digital optical cable.

Here's what I read.

"I plan to use an SP/DIF optical cable to conned tty TV with the receiver for audio only."

That fails for most TVs and since some don't agree I supply a link.

Later they ask "Or do i need a direct connection between the FIOS set-top box and the receiver?"

I let them draw their own conclusion.

Answer
The second way should work fine

-HDMI from FiOS to HDTV

-Digital optical from FiOS to Receiver

Enjoy(!)
