Question

Setting up Roku 3 through receiver and there is no sound.

Jan 24, 2015 5:49AM PST

I just purchased a Roku 3. I have Directv satellite and everything runs through my home theatre receiver. Right now I have an HDMI cable connect from my TV to my Directv HDDVR box and another HDMI cable connected from the box to my receiver. I connected the Roku to the receiver but there is no sound. What am I doing wrong?

What about Roku directly to TV?

Does it work that way?

You could, however...

...the whole point of having a receiver is to be able to enjoy surround sound/avoid horrid built in HDTV speakers and use as few remotes as possible.

Answer
no sound from Roku

If your receiver doesn't support DTS and the Roku box is sending a DTS audio signal, then the receiver won't pass through the audio. You could try and set the audio output format of the Roku to either "Dolby", "PCM", or "stereo".

How much DTS content is actually out there?

Other than a DVD or Blu Ray disc, I don't see much DTS. On Roku, probably even less. YMMV.

Roku3 "Audio" settings
========================

Understanding new audio settings (in FW version 6.1)

The audio settings offer two main options, *automatic and *manual.

*Automatic: ("Auto detect" enabled is usually the default settings) with this option Roku3 should detect your sound system audio capabilities and outputs the best audio format your sound system can handle. Note: you won't find the word "*Automatic" anywhere under "Audio" but instead you'll see "Auto (....)" in "Audio mode" and "Auto detect" in "Digital Audio Out". The format that will show within (....) after the word "Auto" is the format that Roku3 has detected.
For example; Auto(Stereo) if Roku3 is directly connected to a TV - another example; Auto(DD+, DTS) if Roku3 is directly connected to an AVR.
To find out what audio format(s) Roku3 has actually detected, go to "Digital Audio Out" menu and look (at lower right corner) after the word "Detected: ....." see image6 .

*Manual: this option(s) offer alternative settings to override *Automatic. Use it when Roku3 fails to detect your sound system audio capabilities. The audio format you manually select is considered force output. Note: you won't find the word "*Manual" anywhere under "Audio" but instead you'll see "DD", "DD+" "DD+, DTS" & "Stereo-PCM" in "Digital Audio Out". If you select one of these formats, (try to refresh the "Audio mode") exit to Roku3 homescreen then return back into audio settings, you'll see "Auto (....) in "Audio mode", the format that will show within (....) after the word "Auto" is the format that you've selected in "Digital Audio Out".

Keep in mind that *manual selection may turn "On" or "Off" the output of another format (with exception to "Stereo-PCM" is always "On").
For example: if you select "DD" & Auto(DD), that should turn "On" "DD" and "Stereo-PCM" but it turns "Off" "DD+" and "DTS" passthrough, what should happen here depends on the source (streaming channel or playback via usb/network) - if the source is a streaming channel and the title in 5.1DD (that means the title has two soundtracks 5.1DD & Stereo-PCM), Roku3 in that case passes through 5.1DD soundtracks. But if the title in 5.1DD+ (that means the title has two soundtracks 5.1DD+ & Stereo-PCM) Roku3 in that case passes through Stereo-PCM soundtracks only - If the source is playback, Roku3 in that case passes through Dolby Digital (AC3)(DD) and 2ch-PCM audio signals.
Another example: if you select "DD+" & Auto(DD+), that should turn "On" "DD", "DD+ and "Stereo-PCM" but it turns "Off" "DTS" passthrough.
One more example: if you select "DD+, DTS" & Auto(DD+, DTS), that should turn "On" "DD", "DD+, DTS and "Stereo-PCM" passthrough.
Ok, final example: if you select "Stereo-PCM"& "Stereo" that should keep "Stereo-PCM" & turned "On" but it turns "Off" "DD", "DD+, DTS passthrough. In other word, Roku3 passes through Stereo-PCM (2.0AAC > 2ch-PCM) soundtracks only.

Tip, if you select an audio format that your sound system does not support, you may get no sound (or error/restart).
