To share using a dial up.. you need one computer always ON.. then use a software such as Wingate, Winproxy or sygate.... this way anyone just turn on their pc and it will dial automatically... (don't forget to disconnect after using... While this line is in use .. you may not be able to use it to call someone... unless you have another software that have a call waiting or something...
Please note that you don't need to connect a phone line to all pc... just a network cable and a router/switch or maybe just a Hub. And there is no wireless in your system... because you don't have an Access Point.
Now, after you get a dsl line (its only need one phone line.. and may or may not came with a Modem) you will need a an Access Point with or without router plus a Wifi adaptor for each pc you have.
The connection, more or less will be like:
Adsl Modem ==> Access Point with or without router ...... then all pc connected through wireless.
Dear CNET,
My current setup is three computers, all have 56k modems, daisy chained together through the phone line in three separate rooms.
I don't have dsl yet.
The phone lines that come in the house go upstairs and downstairs.
Upstairs, the main line goes through one modem, goes through an
HP officejet v40 xi 3-in-one fax/printer/scanner, through my modem and then to the kids' modem and ends in a wired phone (three rooms, bedroom, office, kids room).
Downstairs, the phone line goes through a digital answering machine to a 2.4 ghz wireless phone.
Also, the house is wired for a second phone line, which we are not using.
I need the network to allow any of my three machines on at any time, to get online and get off, to receive phone calls out and in, to receive answering machine messages, to send and receive faxes, to not have anything interfere with anything else and I would prefer not to have to leave one computer on all the time.
I want any user to be able to get online from any computer at any time without having to do anything with the other computers and without having to have left thier machine on.
The kids are running a P4 WinXP SP2 home edition 1GB Gateway machine, four USB and one LAN networking port.
I am running a 1.2GHZ AMD Duron Win98SE 524 MB machine,
two USB ports.
My wifes' machine is a P2 Win98SE 1.66 MHZ 256MB machine,
no USB or networking ports.
Would we have to use my old machine as a router server or one of the newer machines? Or don't I understand the issues?
My requirements are that I need the network to speak DSL, possibly broadband in the future.
I thought that I would get the three computers up on the
wireless network first. Currently, we're all on 56K wired modems, which is a pain (we all use dial up) and then try snd get DSL.
Can such a system be built from my existing home
hardware/software? Money IS tight.
Can I get away with only having to buy a new PC?
What other equipment, if any, do I need?
Is it as simple as turning on the other phone line and getting DSL for both phone lines?
Do I need WinXP Pro and should all three PCs be running WinXP?
Thank you,
