Setting up faxing ability

Mar 10, 2004 8:47AM PST

I have XP Home addition that was preinstalled when I bought the computer. I have a Lucent modem installed and I can't seem to get my faxing ability to work from anything (Word, printer/fax, etc.). When I go to set up Fax under the Control Panel, then Modem, it starts setting up and tells me to insert Windows XP Home disk. Well, I don't have the disk because it was preinstalled.
I recently had a virus and had my computer "cleaned", could this have deleted or done something...help!
Thanks

Re:Setting up faxing ability + NO XP CD DISK of any kind = This won't work long.

Something is amiss here. Let's say a small accident happens and the OS doesn't boot.

How does this system get back and working?

That's the one issue, but maybe I'm missing something about your predicament. There were some HP/other machines that didn't come with a CD, but when booted an offer to make the CD was presented. If people don't do this, then they get to pay (dearly.)

In short, I would not fix this since any move is likely to make it worse.

FIX THE FIRST PROBLEM of the missing OS CD before you undertake a repair that could bring the OS down around you.

Hi!
Yes, this is an HP machine. If there was an offer, then I missed it (story of my life). But I will follow your advice because that is my fear that I will somehow do something disasterous!
Thanks for all of your help! All of you!

Do you have a fax program installed? XP Home comes with a built-in fax program but it isn't installed by default. Go to the control panel, add/remove programs, then windows components. Select the fax program and install it. If you have a fax modem installed on your computer, you should be able to fax.

I have tried that and it keeps asking for the disk that I don't have.
But thanks!

I don't understand why you don't have the disk. What brand of computer did you buy?

Preinstalled XP should have the .cab files somewhere on the HD for what you are trying to do. It's the setup files found on the CD. You might try a search for *.cab files. They might be in the Windows folder under C:\Windows\Options\

Call the PC vendor and ask them if these files are on the HD and if so, where.
