Question

Setting up Downloads to be saved on an external drive

Jan 5, 2014 12:24AM PST

I'd like to set my external HDD as the default location for most downloads, with the ability to choose to download some items such as programs to C:\ .

I'd also like a simple way to MOVE downloads currently on C:\ . By that I mean to copy the file to H:\ and simultaneous delete the file from C:\ .

I am operating Win 7 on a 4 year old HP Pavillion Entertainment PC 4Gigs x 500 Gigs.

Additionally, this may be the wrong forum to be posing this question. Please let me know if it is.

Fine forum but please don't move.

When I move I don't move. I copy then delete after the successful copy. Yes, it's extra work that I can avoid if I have backups. Many folk attempt to move then it runs out of space, the power goes out and they lose files. You can avoid this by backups or doing the long copy then delete the source folder.

I'm unsure if you are new to using Explorer (the app) so I'll skip it for now.

As to setting up where downloads go, one would have to change that in the app the does the downloads.

Also, in addition to Bob's comments, I don't know about Internet Explorer, but both Firefox and Chrome allow you to specify a specific download location and then you can right click and "Save As" for the exceptions here and there. So all you'd need to do is point the browser to the new location to save downloads by default, then follow Bob's advice for dealing with existing downloads and you're set. I assume IE allows you to specify a specific download location, but if not, maybe it's time to consider something else.
