Setting Up Crossover network

Dec 18, 2003 2:55PM PST

Can someone help me to setup a crossover cable network? I know I can just buy a hub or a switch, but I dont need it. I just want to connect my dad's pc to my pc. Right now, my pc is the one thats connecting to the internet throu a cable modem, using the ethernet port on my asus p4p800 dlx mobo. I want to set my pc up as the gateway, so I installed another nic to it. I got the crossover cable too. Both pcs r running WinXP Pro. Now, I want to know how to setup the second nic on my pc. I tried ICS, and cant get it to work. I used 192.168.0.1 as the ip for the second nic, and 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask. Then on my dad's pc, I used 192.168.0.2 as its ip and 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask. Nothing in gateway and dns server. The first connection on my pc is shared.

Anything else that I'm missing?

First of all if you have Windows Xp you and two nic's in the main computer then you wont need a crossover cable. Use the network wizard to set up the first computer to the internet then, set up a small office network through the other nic. That should be all you need to do.

Unless XP has change networking, you do need a crossover cable when not using a hub, switch, or router.

Just join the NIC of the two computers with the crossover cable and switch on. Windows will detect and configure the simple network automatically. There is no need to worry about ip addresses....

The basics are:

1) Workgroup name is the same
2) File and Print sharing is enabled
3) Some resource or folder is set to share:

For internet sharing through ICS:

4) The client computers IP is set to "Obtain IP Automatically" or in the case of static IP addressing, its gateway is set to the hosts IP address.
