Can't answer about the splitter part, but you need a hardware device that will capture HDTV. That could be a tv/video card, a capture card, or something like the Canopus or ADS Pyro products. You just need to read reviews, and make sure that your device will support capture of HD. Some of the Radeon and Geforce video cards have vivo, (video in and video out), and are able to capture HDTV. You will also need to ensure that the device you choose can record via timed recording (if that is what you want).
what third party parts would you consider the best for me in setting up a media center,,,,
my setup......i have an hdtv with dvi connectors,,,time warner cable.......the setup will ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY be used to record tv shows(both standard and hd programming), nothing else. the programs will be replayed on the computer, not the tv.
i saw a friend's WMC and liked the tivo-like search functionality. which software has the best interface/functionality/scheduler in this regard?
also, my friend used a splitter, but he has normal analog tv and doesn't require hi-res recording. since i have hd, would a splitter reduce the video quality of hd programming?,,,and would it be more advisable to use the pc as a pass-through?,,,i'm thinking cable to pc to cable box to hdtv.
thanks
