Question

Set display to true color (32-bit) Win 10 Dell E2010H monito

Jul 24, 2017 2:04PM PDT

I have been getting black squares on the monitor which disappear when I click in a different spot. This only happens when I am online. I have looked all over and the instructions I have found are:
1. Close all open programs.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. In the Control Panel window, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.
4. In the Display Properties window, click the Settings tab.
5. Click to select the color depth you want from the drop-down menu under Colors.

However, there is no "Appearance and Themes" in the Control Panel, and there is no drop-down menu under Colors when I access the display using Settings.. I have also tried the buttons on the monitor.

I'm running Win 10 64-bit and primarily use Chrome. But I also tried Mozilla and had the same problem. Problem is intermittent.

Answer
I've seen this.

But it was not a monitor issue but a video driver issue. As no OS or host PC is noted, I will guess badly you have a Dell PC. Use your service tag to go to Dell.com and get the video driver for your PC and install it.

I will probably not manage to get to this until Wednesday. (Every time I think a problem will take 15 minutes to fix, it ends up taking hours.) I will have to figure out how to know which driver is the video driver. I think I would find that under devices.

I worry now

That you are going to use the Update Driver button in Device manager. That's not how I fix this issue and has been known to work, not work as well as make a mess of things.

Why not use the old fashioned method of download and install the driver from the maker?

I intend to

search for the driver on Dell and install it. Just have to find out what the driver is called.

Should be called the Video driver.

Use your service tag at dell.com to find the ones for your machine.

Okay.

I will do that. Thanks.

Too many drivers and I can't figure out which one

And none is called video driver. Mostly graphics driver -- which I assume is the same thing. How do I choose?

I log on with service tag number.

Since I can't see what you are seeing.

I'm not able to comment further.

Either tell what you see or get Dell on the phone.

I don't see what you are talking about, unless you are complaining about it being black and white. Have you tried a 16 bit color setting?

Try this, it may not work with w10 as things get moved around.

Right click a blank area of the desktop.
Select screen resolution.
Verify the proper monitor and resolution are shown.
Click advanced settings/monitor.
Verify the refresh rate and the color bits are set proper.

Nope.

Not even a selection for Screen Resolution. But I've checked other places and shows proper monitor and resolution.

When I tried to install either display or video, I had it look in the unzipped folder, but it still said I have the most up-to-date driver. I took screen shots of what the folder contained. A few days later, the blocks of black disappeared. I have been quite busy with hail damage, medical problems and plumbing issues, so took me a while to mention this. Should the problem return, I will post the folder contents. Thanks.
